Satori aims to redefine education in the British Virgin Islands by fostering a co-operative homeschooling community where every child, regardless of their learning style, can thrive. Rooted in the belief that education must extend beyond the classroom, our programme combines online home schooling with immersive outdoor and experiential learning. HOW WE TEACH

One-Room Classrooms & Project-Based Learning

At Satori, we embrace the one-room classroom approach, a method successfully used in Montessori, outdoor schools, and progressive education models worldwide. This means:

In today’s rapidly changing world, children are growing up in an age dominated by technology, AI, and screens. While digital fluency is essential, it must be balanced with real-world, hands-on experiences that nurture creativity, confidence, and a sense of purpose. Most of our outdoor adventures happen in the mornings, when kids are fresh, alert, and ready to engage in active, immersive learning.

ONLINE CURRICULUM

Satori’s online programme offers a powerful blend of global connection and local presence. While the curriculum is delivered online, students come together each day in person, learning side by side in a shared classroom space—guided both by on-site educators and international mentors.

This hybrid model brings together the best of both worlds: the flexibility and reach of online learning with the relational, grounded experience of being part of a real-life learning community. It’s a One World, One Planet approach to education—where children grow in connection with nature, each other, and the wider world.

Daily Flow:

Mornings: Outdoor, Experiential Learning
Each day begins with a two hour immersive, hands-on experiences led by Satori’s two dedicated outdoor education practitioners. Students explore nature, engage in physical challenges, build practical skills, and dive into inquiry-based learning rooted in the natural world. From bushcraft to marine ecology, from teamwork games to nature journaling—mornings are active, embodied, and deeply connected to place. The third morning hour is dedicated to co-curricular activities in collaboration with people in the BVI community who have skills to share such as music, language, sports, performance arts, community service & woodshop etc.
Afternoons: Global Online Learning with Sarah Ponessa
After lunch, students transition indoors for the academic portion of their day. They gather in a shared classroom to participate in live, online lessons with Satori educator Sarah Ponessa, followed by independent project worksupported by on-site facilitators.
- Live Online Classes (1.5 hours daily): Small-group, discussion-based Zoom sessions with Sarah and peers from around the world. Lessons are creative, collaborative, and explore meaningful global themes.
- Supported Independent Learning (1.5 hours daily): Students work on personalised, hands-on projects—researching, building, experimenting, and reflecting—while receiving real-time guidance from the on-site team.

A Growing Pathway: Currently focused on the middle years, Satori’s programme will expand over time to provide a full, alternative education up to age 18—offering a complete, progressive alternative to conventional schooling.
